Health Happens Here logo — twin bridge arches forming a heart, white on coral

Health Happens Here is a fundraising event put on by the Kansas City Medical Society Foundation, a sponsorship-driven evening honoring the people who make healthcare reachable across the city. The brief came with a tagline already written: "Honoring those who bring healthcare within reach for every Kansas Citian."

They had a few directions they were interested in exploring: a bridge, a heart, a cross, open hands. They also had palette ideas and a tone: inclusive, heartfelt, trustworthy.

Event identities have a harder job than they look. It has to stand on its own so guests read it as its own occasion instead of more foundation letterhead, while still clearly belonging to KCMSF. And it has to hold up across a full event production: large-format signage, programs and invitations, screen graphics, and co-branded layouts where it sits next to a dozen sponsor logos at different sizes.

One fixed lockup can't do all that. The mark needed to come apart and go back together depending on where it landed.

Instead of setting a heart on top of a bridge, I made them the same object. Two arched truss spans, modeled on Kansas City's Harry S Truman Peace Bridge, form the top of a heart, and the water lines underneath taper in sequence to draw the point.

The identity ships as interchangeable parts: a full lockup for programs and formal use, a standalone symbol for small spaces and merch, a wordmark for banners and stage graphics, and box variants for signage. Everything comes in black, white, and duotone so it holds up on whatever background the venue has and a sponsor wall stays readable.

The coral and teal keep it away from clinical healthcare branding, which was deliberate. For an evening where you're asking people to give, warm works better than institutional.

The foundation got a complete, production-ready identity, with every variant exported for print, signage, and digital and guidance on when to use which.

Health Happens Here reads as its own event now, and still reads as theirs.
