A free, bilingual back-to-school zine for The Kansas City Beacon. Their research showed that many of the communities they most wanted to reach don't get their news online, so they started The Juice, a print zine that carries practical resources into those communities. This issue was written for unhoused students, students with disabilities, and families who don't speak English.
The material was heavy, covering federal protections, the IEP process, and immigration and language rights, and it had to stay accurate without reading like paperwork. The cover names all three audiences up front. Each rights topic opens on an illustrated "Know your rights" page, and the facing page carries the substance as a Q&A, a step-by-step flow, or numbered rights. Enrollment logistics sit in scannable cards, and student spotlights keep the issue about students.
It went out free in English and Spanish and won a Philly Award from Nonprofit Connect.
